Market Week

22 Feb

Everyone’s heard of Fashion Week, where all the haute couture is presented to the world. Models glide down the catwalk in elaborate outfits while celebrities glitter in the front row. Magazine editors gaze upon the creations, expecting to be dazzled. Buyers sit in the other seats, choosing what you and I will buy in stores next season. The thing is, that’s not what happens. Not all of it anyway.

Celebrities do chill in the front row and magazine editors show up. Buyers don’t really though. They may fill a few seats but they place their orders directly from Market Week.

Market Week is when all of the designers have their Ready To Wear lines out for buyers to place orders. They create these adorable mini-stores and let buyers choose what they want their stores to carry. For the first time ever, I got to go.

I volunteered with a PR company and got access to the showroom. It was fantastic. I saw so many breaktaking garments. The best thing is that I totally know what’s going to be in stores next season. It’s kind of exciting in a fingers wiggling nah-nah-nah-boo-boo way. Everyone who attended was given a copy of the Italian Vogue and a shopping guide (in Italian). Most of the buyers were foreign.

If you ever have the chance to go, I highly suggest it. It’s just such a strange experience.

I’d post pictures only I’m not sure if I’m allowed to.  I don’t even know if I was supposed to sneak any.

Oouuu better not put up any pictures cause you know…there might be some legal issues with that. But damn, I am curious to see though.

They’re not even very good pictures. They’re kind of wiggly because I was trying to pretend that I wasn’t taking them on my cellphone. I was trying to be covert and seem like I was texting. It didn’t work very well. Maybe I’ll be able to post them in the fall.
